THE BRUSH MEETS THE LENS
(TO CELEBRATE CREATIVITY BY DOCTORS ON A VIRTUAL PLATFORM)
Doctors play a major role as lifesavers and have immensely contributed to Mankind and Society. Especially today as we wage a war against an invisible and Lethal virus, on a rampage.
They have been the frontline COVID Warriors, risking the lives of themselves, their family, and their near and dear ones. Toiling day and night saving lives and playing healers.
We salute their efforts.
Many of them too have another side, which is creative and expressive. Both in the form of visual and performing arts and are a storehouse of talent.
A virtual art show showcasing Art and Photography of Doctors, To be inaugurated on 1st July ( Doctors Day)

The land of high passes (Ladakh) is blessed with beautiful night skies for the most part of the year. On one such night, in the frigid winter, we shot this picture of the Milky way with the most iconic structure that is ubiquitous in Ladakh, The Stupa. We hoped that the prayers of the vehicles that pass this stupa will echo in a milky way and be answered by the divine forces within.
When you visit some beautiful places, you admire the beauty and come back. While in some places, you fall in love with the scene so much that you leave part of your soul there. This picture shot at sunset time on the Kadmat beach of the Lakshadweep islands was a memorable long exposure. We can see the two humans sitting on the chair while their souls (Ghost Images) get up and devour the bounty of nature.

Dr. Ian D’Souza
Dr. D’Souza is a practicing cancer surgeon and Medical Director at the Holy Family Hospital, Mumbai, India. He inherited his passion for photography and wildlife from his father. His new-found interest in painting on the other hand comes he insists, from his mother! The first camera he used was his dad’s twin lens reflex film camera, Rolleiflex, in his early teens. That was way back in the sixties. Since then, it’s been a fascinating transition from the analog film cameras of yesteryear to the hi-tech digital SLRs of today.
Coppersmith Barbet
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Size: 20″x 20″
Location: Calangute, Goa, India. July 2015.
About: The Coppersmith Barbet (Psilopogon haemacephalus) is the ‘Official Bird of Mumbai’. It is a beautiful bird that gets its name from its metronomic call that sounds very much like a coppersmith banging its hammer on metal.
Common Silverline Butterfly
Location: Calangute, Goa. November 2013
About: Common Silverline (Spindasis vulcanus) (26-34mm). I was pottering around the farmhouse in Goa when I saw this small, innocuous looking butterfly flitting on the lawn.
Being early November the weather was hot and humid. It was only because I had my camera with a macro lens with me at the time, that I reluctantly decided to get flat on the ground and get a closer look.
Passage
Location: Laxmi Vilas Palace Hotel, Bharatpur, Rajasthan. December 2016
About: The image is of my wife and daughter silhouetted within a series of arches in one of the hotel’s several beautiful passages. Apart from the symbolism, what makes this image for me is the perspective, play of light and symmetrical lines of the arches, floor tiles, and the women and their shadows.
Blue-faced Malkoha
Location: Calangute, Goa. March 2016
About: This is a largish bird with greenish-grey feathers, a greenish bill and a long, graduated, white-tipped tail. The throat and neck are dark with pale spiny feathers. It gets its name from a naked patch of blue skin around the eye and is one of the few bird species I have observed to have long eye lashes that would turn most women green with envy!
These birds are relatively shy but every once in a way they do come out in the open to pose for a photograph.

Travel isn’t always pretty and comfortable but the journey changes you, it has a lot of paths. But I choose to use it as my destiny. Some beautiful paths can’t be discovered without getting lost. This photography is proof that every moment of life’s turns has to greeted with open arms because you cannot see what’s across the horizon until you reach that stage. Nature teaches us that life is exciting always.
Blue Yonder
If you want to relax, watch the clouds pass by if you’re laying on the grass, or sit in front of the creek; just doing nothing and having those still moments is what really rejuvenates the body. This picture reflects the thoughts in my mind and gives hope that the sun always shines above the clouds.

Prayer Flags
Location: Himani Chamunda, Himachal Pradesh (2018)
About: Buddhist tradition of putting up prayer flags is well known where differently coloured flags carry a specific prayer. This image was captured when on a break from COVID duties and driving through Bir Forest Reserve (Himachal Pradesh). Spontaneous forest fires are a norm in the hills but to find this string of prayer flags surviving amongst the ashes seemed to be saying ‘Don’t worry, even though everything seems to be falling apart humanity will survive on the strenght of it’s spirituality’
Dog day Afternoon
Location: Himani Chamunda, Himachal Pradesh (2018)
About: Walking through idyllic forests of Himani Chamunda I was caught in a sudden downpour. Luckily for me I had spotted a building under construction nearby and returned to it for shelter. I approached it cautiously and found a dog in a similar predicament, both intruders and highly nervous. The dog was captured in this frame in the few seconds we spent sizing each other up. Am sure that’s what won him over as he broke his gaze and decided to follow me during the remainder of my explorations.
The Butterfly
Location: Captured on a river island in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh
About: Holi had been an exuberant but brief celebration in the hospital so that essential staff could revert to ward duties. As i had the privilege of a ‘rest day’ I wandered along a river in search of birds. Subsequently, I waded through the river to a quite island. I was contemplating on the stark contrast the dried grass presented to the colorful fest I had just come away from when a butterfly unmindful of my proximity spent much time on one ‘dry’ blade and then another. If a butterfly could find opportunities in a seemingly barren space so must we in a seemingly difficult situation.
The Muse
Location: Baijnath Temple, Himachal Pradesh (2017)
About: Travelling on duty, through Mandi district of Himachal I came across this heritage building of Baijnath Temple. I couldn’t resist an opportunity to stop and shoot some. Not wanting to spend time unlacing my army boots or desecrating the holy place I decided to go around peeping through open doors, iron partitions and gaps in the surrounding walls. There was this one niche which gave a good view of activities within and the building. Quite some clicks layer I noticed a lizzard not inches away from my camera that had remained well camouflaged against the wall. It kept bobbing it’s head as if it was checking out my camera and the temple alternately. It seemed as if it was speaking to me “Yeah vantage point, go on, you got it.” The Lizzard became the centre of my focus as it seemed to bring life to the mute walls of the temple.
Girl in the Shadows
Location: Rajasthan (2014)
About: The composition is that of Edgar Degas’ sculpture ‘Ballerina’ in the foreground of a thorny bush used for a dry flower arrangement. An incidental capture in one of those light-out nights while posted to a remote village in Rajasthan. ‘Nirbhaya’ was fresh on my mind from evening news and this seemed to capture the mood well. Even though the girl is confronted with darkness and difficulties she has forward and upward looking demeanor.
Lady with the sickle
Location: Jaitsisar Rajasthan (2014)
About: While it maybe said that Mother nature feeds us it is the farmers who nurture us. Over days I saw this lady working in the blistering summer heat of April and hoped to catch a serious, wrinkled against the sun countenance. But she disappointed me. there wasn’t ever the slightest hint of a frown, just a tranquil look and her rhythmic move strangely calming. It made me forget the mid day heat.

This is my favorite city Venice during carnivale di Venezia in 2019, the last time it took place due to cancellations for Covid
The picture has all the elements the masked performers (masks are part of life now), the Santa Maria della Salute in the background which was built after an epidemic of plague nearly 400 years ago and the famous gondolas going towards the Ponte dei Sospiri or the bridge of sighs at sunset. It’s a reminder epidemics has been part of human civilization and one soon we will overcome the current one.
I was in Pink city Jaipur as an invited guest speaker in a surgical conference and only had a spare evening to enjoy the sights of the city. I was standing opposite the Hawa Mahal admiring its beauty and locals were just walking past it without even looking at it. So I tried to get a silhouette in front of the building.
